Brocade is a general term for fabrics with patterns woven using gold leaf thread (flat gold thread), and refers to a luxurious fabric with gold thread woven into the weft. It was introduced from China during the Muromachi period, and was woven in Japan during the Edo period, where it was widely used by tea masters and samurai.
